Luxury isn’t an Ornament – It’s a Utility

By Tim Wedgwood

After 30 years in this industry, I’ve seen every “luxury” trend come and go. I’ve watched hotels hide behind words like “quintessential” and “timeless charm” to excuse the fact that their building is falling apart behind the scenes.

To me, that’s not heritage. It’s obsolescence hidden by legacy.

In 2026, I believe we’ve reached a turning point. Real luxury has moved from being an ornament, something you just look at, to being a utility. It’s about how a room actually worksfor you. If you can’t use the TV as if you were at home, or if the Wi-Fi drops out while you’re sending an email, the hotel has failed you no matter how many “AA Rosettes” are hanging in the lobby or stars its awarded itself in an outdated assessment scheme that thinks it supersedes the Reviews from the arena of public opinion.

The “New Running Water”

We’ve treated our digital infrastructure exactly like the plumbing: it has to be powerful, it has to be invisible, and it has to just work.

While our “prestigious” competitors are still faffing about with 1980s Sky boxes and a tangle of three different remotes, we’ve taken a different path. We recently threw away TVs that are objectively better than the ones you’ll find in the suites of most legacy hotels.  Why?  Because “good enough” was only true yesterday.

The £25k of Hardware you can’t see

We didn’t just buy “fast Wi-Fi” off the shelf. We invested in a 500Mbps dedicated symmetrical connection. 500Mbps Down and 500Mbps Up:

Most hotels have “asymmetrical” lines, they’re okay for reading the news, but they crawl when you try to upload a file or join a video call. Our speed is a “constant,” not a “maybe” and we don’t invade your space with “data capture” portals. just to get online. A simple, one-word password: Southlawn. It’s your privacy, and we respect it.

4K without the Friction:

Every room has a high-speed, internet-connected 4K Smart TV. No external boxes, no lag, and no annoying hotel hello channel that seems impossible to navigate away from

While the competition is busy polishing their brass door knockers, we’re busy making sure your data packets are moving at the speed of light. Because in 2026, a “quintessential” stay means nothing if the basic utilities of modern life don’t work.

Enjoy your stay
